That is until Smelly Washer contacted me and asked me if I wanted to try their product. Through the power of Google I found out that many of you have stinky washers and that made me wonder about my washing machine. The clothes come out smelling clean, so I’m good, right? To be sure, I stuck my head in my washing machine (the lengths I go to for you people!) and took a sniff. My washing machine smelled like detergent with a faint end note of funk.
Urm, send the Smelly Washer please.
Turns out that even though I let the washing machine dry out between loads I still do a few things that cause washing machine smells. Oops.
I added one capful of Smelly Washer to my washing machine and ran the cleaning cycle. Once it finished I took a sniff – no more detergent and slight funk smell. Yay!
If you have a particularly smelly washing machine, you may have to do an overnight soak/run it though twice.
You can use Smelly Washer top loading, front loading, and HE washing machines. Smelly Washier is made from natural citrus based ingredients and is biodegradable. In addition to airing out my washing machine and wiping down the inside door gaskets, I’m going to start running Smelly Washer through my washing machine once a month just to keep any possible funk at bay.

ReplyDeleteMy tip is to use vinegar as your fabric softener because fabric softeners are one of the reasons front loaders mold. Also vinegar kills mold and bacteria in your clothes.

ReplyDeleteI didn't have a smelly washer until I moved to this condo - now I have a really smelly washer. I leave the door open all the time now (well, except when washing, silly!)

TIP: Use hairspray on pen marks!

ReplyDeleteMy laundry tip is to wet tough stains (with water or something like Shout), let it sit for a minute and then scrub it with a stiff-bristled brush. The soaking/scrubbing combo gets stains out of my work shirts better than bleach ever did!
We use vinegar as a laundry booster (and since we're cloth diapering, we do LOTS of laundry).
ReplyDeleteMy worst laundry story happened when I accidentally washed a tube of chapstick and the entire load had grease stains! Oh, and my towels are stinky sometimes... so I think this product would be great to try!

ReplyDeleteI forgot a load of towels in the washer one hot summer's day. By the time I took them out, they were ruined because they smelled so horrible - had to throw them out. :(
i have a bad habit of leaving a load in overnight and forgetting it the next day. then it smells so badly i have to wash it again! of course this smell accumulates and i have a smelly washer!! so this will help me!
ReplyDeleteI always have a problem with my washer/clothes getting stinky if I don't dry them immediately. We live in the south and it's always hot in our laundry room.
ReplyDeleteI always try to run FULL loads in the washer. Less water used and less loads to sort and fold.
ReplyDeleteA helpful laundry tip--the magic power of SUNSHINE will get out tomato, carrot, watermelon and other red/orange stains. Just lay them out in the sun for a few hours and presto! They magically disappear.
ReplyDeleteI am pregnant and have the nose to go with it...uggh! I've really noticed that our bath towels have a musty funk to them & who really wants to put that up to their face after a nice shower. I would love to give this product a try before investing in all new towels. I like to use 1/2 c. vinegar and/or 1/2 c. baking soda to boost my laundry detergent. I also toss a dry bath towel in the dryer with a wet load to cut down on drying time and tennis balls are excellent for fluffing in the dryer if you can stand the noise.
ReplyDeleteMy front-loading washer started to get awfully mildewy despite leaving the door open all of the time. To make matters worse, the spin cycle became less effective and the dryer had to work much harder. After a little investigation I found that baby socks and underwear were getting trapped between the rubber (gasket?) and the drain at the front of the washer. Who knew there was even a gap? Now I check it every time and use a lingere bag for the really tiny articles and have far fewer problems!

ReplyDeleteThe laundry is in the basement and often the last thing I do before bed is gather up a load of clothes and start the washer. On a good day I will have those clothes in the dryer before breakfast and folded before we leave the house. If the day does not start out well, that load of clothes can take awhile before I get to them. I learned how smelly clothes can get and take care never to leave wash sit during hot months. The washer still gets smelly though.
