Do You Read Real Books or Ebooks?

We love books. We buy books as vacation souvenirs. We buy books as gifts to each other. We buy books just because.

We have a lot of books.

To keep the book population under control, save money, and be a bit greener in my purchasing, I check the library first if I want to read a new book. If after I read it and think I’d like to have it then I’ll buy the book.

Husband does the exact opposite. It drives me a little crazy because we’re running out of room on our bookshelves – again.  Husband said he wanted a Kindle because the thing holds a bazillion books (including purchasing blog feeds like Condo Blues.)  He has no intention of stopping the book purchases any time soon so I bought him one. Happy Birthday Husband!

Reading ebooks is our One Small Green Change for September. I think you can check ebooks out of our library too. Although I’m not quite sure how that works.

While I am a techy gadgety girl, I like anything that pries me away from my computer for enjoyment (this is the reason why I don’t stream movies or TV shows on my computer often if at all.) Reading paper books does that for me. In the past, I’ve tried reading ebooks on my PDA and it was clunky, the thing would lose a charge, and I’d lose my place in my ebook.  That's a real pain in the bookmark.

I noticed a couple of people reading ebooks when I was traveling home from BlogHer. They look handy and much lighter to carry around than a paper book. That would be nice for traveling. Personally I'm on the fence. I think I'll wait to see what Husband thinks of reading ebooks on his Kindle before I consider buying one for myself. Or I can do the spousal thing and just steal his Kindle and use it when he's not looking :)

What do you think? Do you have an ebook reader? Do you like it? Which one do you have? Do you really think it’s greener than producing a paper book?
