Purex Crystals Fabric Softener Coupon and Review

I make HE laundry detergent powder because I can’t find an HE powder detergent that I like. I tried 100% plant based laundry detergent and it didn’t work very well for me. That was a big disappointment. Plant based cleaners work very well in other areas of my life.

I keep going back to homemade laundry detergent. The only bad thing about my homemade laundry detergent is that the clothes get stiff and wrinkle when I line dry them on hangers in my bathroom. I add vinegar in the fabric softener cup of my washer. Vinegar works OK. Not great, but OK.

I can’t use liquid fabric softeners because they are oil based. The oil in liquid fabric softener coats Husband’s super sweat wicking technical running gear and inhibits the super sweat wickingness. The same goes for the microfiber towels I use for cleaning and Blitzkrieg’s muddy paws.

Here’s the part where I feel like a big snobby green jerk.

When Purex introduced their Complete Crystals Softener, I didn’t give it a second look. Sure, I use their Fels Naptha (it doesn’t contain naphthalene) and 20 Mule Borax to make laundry detergent, but I didn’t think the Crystals were something I could use because Purex is a big company, new stuff from big companies isn’t natural based blah, blah, blah.

I was wrong.

The active ingredients in Purex Complete Crystals Softener are salt and clay. It’s 92% natural. The exception is the fragrance. Like most companies, Purex gets that from a fragrance house who won’t tell them exactly what’s in the fragrance (the same goes with some of the stuff I use from hippie companies too.) It’s not perfect, but few things are and I’m OK with that. Your mileage, as always may vary.

How Does Purex Crystals Fabric Softener Work?

I washed several loads of laundry with my homemade HE laundry detergent and Purex Complete Crystals Softener. It is compatible with high efficiency washing machines. You add it directly to the clothes in the drum instead of pouring it into the liquid softener dispenser.

The laundry I line dried was less wrinkled and crunchy stiff. The laundry I dried in the dryer came out a smidge softer than before. Husband worked out in his super sweat wicking technical workout clothes and didn’t notice a difference in it’s super sweat wicking performance. I, on the other hand, found his workout clothes just as toxically smelly as before. I made it a point to use all of my microfiber cleaning options during the test period and they worked business as usual too.

For the first time in years, my laundry smelled nice out of the washer and dryer. Is it wrong to say I miss the smell of regular laundry detergent?
