This week was full of surprises Karl and Kellie being both of them. Nate Berkus showed up as the guest judge. The camera challenge was to do a live DIY on Nate’s show. Meg nailed the camera challenge again. Meg is proving she’s comfortable in front of the camera.
The performance of the other three designers during the camera challenge was surprising. I think Mark let the live audience make him nervous. Mark is usually very personable in front of the camera but this time he fell flat in his face. Ouch.
Kellie left her perky on camera personality in the green room because her personality didn’t shine. Surprising because I expected her to do well in front of a live audience. this time.
I’m bowled over by Karl. He was personable, well thought out, and didn’t klunk through this camera challenge as he did earlier in the competition. Karl has listened to all of his past critiques and it shows. Nice!
What worked:
Meg’s wall trim wall treatment. I agree that Meg’s wood trim wall treatment was the highlight of the episode. I like the idea of the shelves but would have liked to see them as floating shelves. The L brackets cheapened the look. I also would have liked to see a deeper and richer yellow on the walls. I think it was washed out but then again, I am a bright color girl. The one thing I do not get is the woven basket wheels the judges went gaga over. I am usually all over symmetry but they looked like weird wagon wheels on the wall and unneeded given the architectural elements she already added to the room with the molding.
Karl’s bookshelves. Using a book as the shelf in a bookshelf was a clever twist on the make a floating shelf out of a book idea. Karl’s room was pretty good. Not great, but good given the shopping and budget constraints. Karl surprised me this week. He’s improving these last few weeks and could easily be in the final two.
What didn’t work:
I am OVER fake starburst mirrors, clocks, and anything else. Karl knew his clock was too small for his wall. I like the scale of Kellie’s circle installation. The spoon starburst thingy may have been clever 10 years ago before I had Fake StarBurst Mirror Fatigue. Sorry. I am sure many of you starburst mirror lovers like it.
Mark’s room was bare. A bare room and a lackluster camera challenge rightfully put him in the bottom two this week. I wonder why Mark struggled, is it because he couldn’t use reclaimed wood this week? I don’t remember Mark saying he has had time management issues before but the judges called him on it. Did I miss it in an earlier episode?
Kellie. Oh poor Kellie. She’s been slowly running out of steam since the wedding challenge. I didn’t think her room was as awful as the judges made it out to be, the window treatment in particular. The window treatments are dated, but not abysmal, and preferable to Mark’s bare wall. Kellie’s art work on the TV wall needed editing. One would have worked and tied into the pop of turquoise on the circle wall. If we were judging solely on this episode, I would have sent Mark home. Unfortunately, unlike Meg, Kellie did not step up after last week’s second chance, especially after this week’s lackluster camera challenge. Kellie is gone this week. Too bad. She was one of my early favorites to take it.
What did you think of Mark and Kellie’s rooms? Is Karl really all that? Meg’s wagon wheels – yeah or nay? Who do you think will win?
