I did a little Small Business Saturday shopping at the
thrift store and came home with a round candle. With a
little Green DIY Diva magic, I turned it into a painted snowman candle in less
than an hour.
I wiped the candle down with rubbing alcohol to allow the
paint adhere to the candle.
Since this is a petroleum based candle, I'm not going to burn it. It is for decorative use only.
I grabbed black and orange craft paint from my craft stash and
Q-tips from the bathroom. I’m horrible at painting round dots, so I cheat and
use a Q-tip.
I dipped a Q-tip cotton swab into the black paint and pressed it
into the candle to make the dots for the eyes and mouth. I made the carrot
shape nose by dipping a Q-tip Precision Tip sideways into the orange paint and
onto the candle. I let the first coat of paint dry and went over it a second
time.
This painted snowman candle makes a good neighbor, teacher, or gift exchange gift!
You won't see the whites of Frosty's eyes since they are made out of coal. However, if he wants an iris, I can paint his eyes by using the bigger Q-Tip cotton Swab for
the eye. After the paint dries, I use the same technique to make the pupil with
a Q-Tip Precision Tip with another color of paint.
I know it is a disposable, but I haven’t found a good green
reusable substitute for Q-tips, especially when I need to remove/touch up paint
or stain on a DIY project. I try to take it in a greener direction by using
Q-tips instead of the store brand because Q-Tips are cotton instead of synthetic. Q-Tips have paper shafts
instead of plastic, which means Q-tips are compostable, depending upon what you
use them for of course.
In addition to providing me with samples and asking me to
share favorite ways I use Q-tips products, Q-tips asked me to let you know
about the new
Q-tips cotton swabs Facebook page where you can
enter the Q-tips Tip-a-Thon! To
participate, you simply need to share the way you use Q-tips cotton swabs
or Q-tips Precision Tips, and you’ll be eligible for a chance to win a
$100 gift card or the $1,000 grand prize. That would buy a lot of Q-Tips!
TheQ-tips Tip-a-Thon runs from now until December 15, 2011 11:59 EST.
