How to Make Easy Embroidered Christmas Stockings

I bought a couple of color your own Christmas stocking kits  (similar to these color your own Christmas Stocking kits) thinking it might be a cute reusable gift wrap idea. (Disclosure: I am including affiliate links in this post for you convenience.) I wasn’t too jazzed with the colors or quality of the three markers that came in the kit which I expected since it came from a dollar store. No big deal. I planned on coloring it with craft paint and adding a few easy embroidered accents and outlines for fun.

I tuned the tote bag inside out and used a seam ripper like this one to remove the side seams so the stocking will lie flat while I embellish it. To keep the gauzy material from fraying as I handled it, I sewed a quick zigzag stitch along the raw edges because covering the edges with painter’s tape on the edges didn’t work very well (your results may vary.)

I put a scrap piece of cardboard under the front of the stocking , used several paintbrushes from my favorite craft paintbrush set here to paint the large outlines with this Folk Art Multisurface craft paint. Folkart Multisurface is my favorite craft paint because it is water based and non toxic (super important!,) and will adhere beautifully to just about any surface.

Who wants gingerbread?

Just like I did with my Halloween tote bag, I outlined the design using an outline stitch and embroidery floss in coordinating colors. I filled in some of the areas that needed a little something extra like the white on the candy and the gingerbread girl’s face with a satin stich.

Christmas candy!

The project didn’t take very long to embroider although Lacey would have liked it better if it did because she sat next to me on the sofa while I streamed movies as I worked.

I wish this project took longer. I like watching romantic comedies with Lisa

After Lacey approved my embroidery for Quality Assurance,  I pinned side seam of  the Christmas stocking right sides together, and sewed the bag back together on my sewing machine.
