DIY Dog Tail Coat Rack

 I have dog.

She has lots of stuff.

Most of  Lacey’s stuff is for taking walks. Her leash, towel, et al is in the drawer of a small step stool by the front door.

In theory.

Most days it looks like this.

 Clutter makes me cranky!

All that junk spilling up and over the step stool means I can’t use it to see out of the peephole in the front door.

That. Short.

Husband thinks this is hysterical.

I think it is time Lacey supervises her first DIY project.

How to Organize Dog Leashes

Save this organization idea to your Pinterest boards for later! Share it with your friends!

I bought four dog tail hooks from IKEA (AKA Lisa’s Mecca.) Yeah the hooks are silicone and yeah I could have found any number of nonplasticy things to repurpose as hooks but a row of tiny dog hineys hanging on the wall makes me smile.

I like the contrast of the modern design of the hook against the texture of repurposed wood.  Repurposed wood sounds much nicer and designer-y than Broken Fence Parts I Hauled Home from the Side of the Road So I Can Make a Hanger Upper Thing for the Cost of Dog Butt Hooks.

You will need:

1 Wood board 16 inches long by 6 inches wide (or to your preferred size) - If you don't have reclaimed wood lying around or want a different look, you can buy a variety of unfinished wood craft signs here

4 dog tail hooks (If you do not have an IKEA nearby you can buy IKEA Bastis Dog Tail Hooks here)

Tape measure or yardstick

Pencil

Screws  I used very small I have them in my garage size

Screwdriver

2 sawtooth picture hangers and a hammer - Sawtooth picture hangers look like this

Make it:

1. Use the yardstick as a guide to pace the hooks onto the board at an interval that looks pleasing to you. My hooks are two inches in from the end of the board and four inches from each other.

Measure twice, mark once

2. Use the pencil to mark where you want to hang the hooks on the board.

3. Use the screwdriver to screw the screws that will hold the hooks in place according to your place marks on the board. I could have used nails for this project but screws have the extra “teeth” to grip the wood and will withstand yanking leashes and such on the hooks better. At least I hope.

No power tools needed!

4. Hang the hooks on the screws on the front of the board.

Hanging up!

5. Check in with your project manager to verify the project is going according to plan (that I forgot to share with the project manager.)

I made sure no dogs were harmed in the making of this project.

6. Attach two saw tooth hangers to either end of the board with a hammer.

To withstand the stress of pulling items off the hooks, I should have drilled the hanging screws into a wall stud. Me being me, I didn’t have a stud where I wanted to hang my wall hook organizer. Isn't that always the way?

To hang a heavy object on drywall, you need to use a self tapping drywall anchor like this kind. I like the screw in drywall anchors because I think they are easier to install than molly bolts.  Both work and you can use whichever style you like.

Once your wall anchors and screws are in place, hang it on the wall, and hang it up!

Super cute! I received a similar item (hooks no hineys) for Christmas and it does make my stairs look so much neater (especially now that I'm used to actually hanging the collars and leashes up).

Lacey is quickly learning if she sits still for a picture she earns a treat. She wants to be a doggie supermodel.
