How to Make Rosemary Mint Salt Scrub

I recently declared a Treat Yo’ Self weekend after buying a massage special from Groupon (so much cheaper than going to the massage school and I got a much better massage too!)

A fun little family adventure with Lacey, dinner and drinks out followed. Sunday, prompted by the desire to wear a skirt on a gloriously warm day, and the state of some winter skin in desperate need of exfoliation, an in home spa day was in order since everything was closed. Otherwise - you guessed it - Groupon time.

Fortunately, everything I need to make a fantastic nontoxic and natural exfoliating skin scrub is sitting right here in my kitchen. I bet you do too!

Exfoliating Rosemary Peppermint Salt Scrub: The Step by Step Tutorial

You will need:

1 cup (or so) of salt – You whatever type of salt you have on hand sea salt, Kosher salt, Epsom salt, heck even regular table salt will work in a pinch!

1/2 cup (or so) of plant based oil – I’m using olive oil but any plant or vegetable based kitchen oil like sunflower or peanut will work as well as the more health and beauty related oils like sweet almond oil, jojoba oil, or grape seed oil. Do not use baby oil (mineral oil!) Mineral oil is a petroleum derived oil that your skin can't obsorb so it make your skin feel even dryer and can clogs the pores in your skin.

Dried mint leaves

Dried rosemary leaves

Optional: Peppermint essential oil or Rosemary essential oil use whatever brand is your favorite. I usually buy mine from Amazon.

Bowl

Spoon

Pretty container with a lid for storage or as a gift idea

Make it:

1. Mix the salt of your choice, mint, and rosemary together in a bowl. I like add equal amounts of dried mint and rosemary by eye. If you absolutely need a measurement, try adding a tablespoon or two of each to the mix.

I gave my sea salt a short whirl in the blender to break down the HUGE sea salt crystals in the package to less painful smaller size. You may or may not wish to do the same.

2. Optional: Stir in a few drops of peppermint or rosemary essential oil or both to the salt mixture. Or you can leave it out if you like.

Don’t use my DIY peppermint extract in this salt scrub tutorial. Peppermint extract is alcohol based and will dry out your skin while essentials oils will not.

3. Pour the olive oil into a bowl with the salt mixture. Thoroughly mix everything together with the spoon until the ingredients are well blended.

Mixing it up!

Basically we are doing a 2 to 1 dry mixture to oil mixture if you are working with a container that is larger or less than the small jelly Mason jar I am using in this tutorial. If you like your scrubs on the dry side use less oil in the mix. You can also use more oil than I have shown here if you like your scrubs to have more liquid in them.

4. Label the jar as desired.

My rosemary mint salt scrub makes a great gift for Mother’s Day, a birthday, or any day when you or someone you love wants to feel extra special.
