Quick and Easy Foam Pumpkin Makeover

I have a love hate relationship with foam crafting pumpkins. I love that they are reusable. I hate that most of them look horrifically fake.

 

Yes, I know I could use real pumpkins. I do for indoor decorating and puree them later for Thanksgiving desserts.

 

Outside it’s fake pumpkins all the way where real pumpkins are most likely squirrel food and when performing at Fall festivals where real fruit is likely to get smashed.

 

This sweet little girl was fascinated by the pumpkin clip I made over.  I am forever grateful to the photographer that captured this moment!

 

How to Make Mod Podge Cloth Pumpkins

You will need:

 

Foam pumpkin – I used    these exact foam craft mini pumpkins on a clip 

 

Orange fabric

 

Mod Podge – I am using Mod Podge Hard Coat (you can learn about it here) for the pumpkins I wear as part of a costume so they will survive the day. Otherwise regular Mod Podge like this kind works just as well.

 

Paint brush

 

Scissors

 Small alligator clips like these – if your mini pumpkin doesn’t come with a clip

  

Hot glue and hot glue gun  – if your mini pumpkin doesn’t come with a clip

Step by Step How to Make it Tutorial

 

1. Use the scissors to cut the fabric into strips. Use the size of the pumpkin to determine how wide you decide to cut the fabric strips. There is no right or wrong size here.

 

2. Use the paint brush to apply Mod Podge to a small area of the pumpkin. It is best to work in small sections of the pumpkin because Mod Podge dries quickly after it is applied.

 

3. Stick a strip of fabric to the decopodged  area of the pumpkin. Don’t worry if the strip is too long. You can trim it to size with your scissors. Don’t worry if the strip is too short. You can add a strip of fabric to that area of the pumpkin.

4. Repeat Steps 2 and 3 a bunch of times until the pumpkin is covered in fabric strips.

 

5. Use the scissors to cut a small circle with a hole in the center for the stem. We will use it to hide all of the ends of fabric around the stem. Or you don’t have to if you like the look already.

 

One pumpkin I added a fabric circle around the stem. On the other I did not.

6. Use the paint brush and Mod Podge to glue the fabric circle over the stem and top of the pumpkin. I repeated Step 5 to add a fabric circle to the bottom of my pumpkin because people may see the bottom when I clip it to my clothing. Or you don’t have to if you like the look already.

 

7.  After the Mod Podge has thoroughly dried, use the hot glue and hot glue gun to attach an alligator clip to the bottom of the pumpkin if necessary.

 

8. Decorate and celebrate!
