One of my favorite things about St Patrick’s Day is that it is the one day of the year that even mainstream places will play Celtic music. Listening to a good jig or reel always puts in a good mood no matter what.
The only thing I like better than listening to Scottish and Irish music is dancing to it. I performed as a Scottish Country Dancer and even had Scottish Country Dances at my wedding reception.
Scottish Country Dance is social dancing somewhat like American Square Dancing. Competitive Irish and Scottish dance is a completely different thing.
Since I like the music so much, why not decorate our door for Saint Patrick’s Day with a quick and easy shamrock featuring The Swallowtail Jig sheet music? The Swallowtail Jig is one of my favorite jigs because of the lyrical flute part that I’m still trying to nail down because I'm out of practice playing the flute.

Quick and Easy DIY St Patrick's Day Shamrock

Martha Stewart Multi Surface Craft Pant in Scottish Highlands – you can buy the Scottish Highlands craft pint I used here
Sheet music – if you don’t want to sacrifice your sheet music (luckily I have several copies of the flute part) you can buy sheet music scrapbook paper here

Paint brushes
Scissors
Twine

1. Paint the wood shamrock with two coats of Scottish Highlands. I chose this bright green because my shamrock will hang it on a hunter green door and I want it to stand out.
My original plan was to paint the center hearts in this exact Folk Art Multi Surface Classic Green paint and decorate them with a wood burning tool like this one to burn a Celtic knot design into the wood. It failed for a lot of reasons. That’s when I broke out the sheet music.
2. I made a pattern from one of the hearts by making a rubbing of the heart shape using a piece of scrap paper and a pencil and cutting it out with a pair of scissors. If you are using separate wood heart shapes you can skip this step and trace the wood shape heart for your pattern.
3. I used the pattern to cut out three hearts shapes from the sheet music.
4. I glued the sheet music to the heart with a coat of Mod Podge Outdoor and a paintbrush. I allowed it to dry and sealed the paper to the shamrock with a coat of Mod Podge Outdoor.
Tip: To keep the ink from an ink jet printer from running when sealing it with Mod Podge, put it freezer for an hour or so first or you can use a laser jet print.
5. If using separate wood heart pieces: Use the wood glue to attach the hearts to the shamrock and allow it to dry.
6. Attach a piece of twine to the back of the shamrock with your favorite type of hanger, hang it up, and shamROCK!
