Now that we are moving on in to warm Spring weather (in theory. This is the Midwest after all. We can experience all 4 seasons in one week just to keep things interesting) it's the perfect opportunity to spiff up, renovate, and decorate our front porch and yard.
Which shoots a long overdue project to the top of our porch project punch list: replace the overhead porch lights!
Our porch light fixtures are original to the house and not made to last. The entire fixture is made of plastic and was so brittle it broke apart when I gently shuttled it from the porch ceiling to a waiting garbage can. There was no salvaging any part of this light fixture and truthfully, we didn't want to either.
The hunt for new porch lights was on!
I wanted pendent light fixtures with an open bottom to make changing the light bulbs easier (we cut the bottom from the old flush mount fixtures after one developed a hole as a stop gap at the time.) I also wanted a porch light with clean lines and in the Craftsman style or at least inspired by it.
After searching for longer than it should have taken to find what I wanted in white to go with our porch and trim, I bought two of this exact Craftsman style outdoor pendant light and impatiently waited for a dry day (Spring showers and all) so I could install them. The most difficult part of this porch light makeover (but not really) was shortening the chain and electrical cord because it was looooooooooong!
I love the clean lines and the interest the seeded glass adds to the lamps. Once the light bulbs from the original fixtures burn out (waste not and all) I'll replace them with outdoor LED Edison Bulbs like these to add a little visual interest since the new porch pendant lights feature the light bulbs more prominently than the old flush mount porch lights.
