I took advantage of an actually-feels-like-Spring day to clear the flowerbeds of leaves and weeds. Like most DIY projects around here it:
1. Snowballing into another project - Operation: Keep Lacey Out of the Flower Beds
2. Required a trip to the store for supplies.
Fortunately, I didn't need to change from my puttering around in the yard clothes into something a little more presentable for errands because I got to test some sweet duds courtesy of Duluth Trading Company. Duluth Trading Company started making construction tool organizers and eventually branched out into work clothes for men and women. Although honestly, I don't think of them as gardening clothes but more like the perfect clothes to take on vacation.
My fair skinned self appreciates that both the skirt and henley shirt I tested have UFP sun protection (especially when I almost always forget to apply sunscreen), the secret zippered pocket in the henley which will come in handy during travel, and the sweat wicking, quick drying fabric of the skirt. I accidentally tested that one out after I spilled a glass of water on the front of my skirt. It dried quickly and will be my number one pick the next time I ride flume rides at Cedar Point.
But the thing I really appreciated (besides Duluth Trading Company realizing that women need pockets in their clothes as much as men - thank you!) is that my skirt has a secret - it is really a skort!
Surprise! It's a skort! No flashing the neighbors while I'm working in the yard!
I live in skirts during the summer because I don't have to deal with the trauma of trying to find pants or shorts that fit my crazy pear shape. And if that skirt is a skort, all the better because I can wear it riding a bike or to an amusement park and not worry about showing off things I don't want to show off. I am definitely buying more Duluth skorts for summer vacation because they are offering free shipping now through June 30, 2013, just enter code “T13PRCG” (Note: $50 minimum order. Minimum order applies to total before tax, shipping or gift card purchases. Valid for US shipping only, on standard delivery.)
I grabbed the mother of all Dog Mommy Purses, the Oil Cloth Tote, that holds a ton, and headed out to find a keep the pets out of the flower bed solution.
I found that I was carting around three half full bottles of triclosen free
sanitizer when I switched purses. Dog mom, remember?
To keep pets out of the garden, most people suggest you put some sort of pinwheel (preferably shiny metal like plastic) in your garden because the motion detracts animals from tracking through your flower beds.
It might work, but I'm not fond of the look.
I poked around and found something the wind will catch and cause movement (important) with added sound to shoo my dog away - wind chimes!
The lavender bush in this photo isn't dead. It is still dormant.
I installed wind chimes on a little Shepard's hooks in the easy entryway sections of my flowerbeds. I went with bees because the lavender attracts the most amazing big, fat bumblebees all summer long.
