Quick and Easy DIY Heart Door Decoration

I like to decorate the front door of my house but lately I haven’t been feeling the winter door wreath.  It probably has a lot to do with most of the wreaths I like have greenery that doesn’t show up well on our green front door.

Not to mention I seem to have a love hate wreath relationship. I love the wreaths my neighbors use to decorate their doors and seem to hate every wreath in the store. What can I say? I’m the Goldilocks of front door décor, apparently.

I found a contemporary, modern, classic, or rustic (depending upon how you view it) front door decoration idea when I made a fast and simple Danish Christmas Heart decoration to coordinate with the giant outdoor Christmas gnome decorations I made from tomato cages last year.

I like the look.

Especially when long after the outdoor Christmas decorations are carefully put away for the next year, I can get the jump on decorating for Valentine’s Day by keeping the heart hanging on the front door.

How to Make a Valentine’s Day Heart Door Decoration

This is a quick and easy holiday door decorating idea that you can use all year round if you like. I used the same secret technique I use to keep my DIY door signs from from flopping against our metal front door when my husband claims he doesn’t slam the door shut with a THUMP!  (Every. Single. Time. He. Closes. A. Door.) – magnets!

You will need the following supplies to make this project:

(Disclosure: I am including affiliate links in this post for your convenience.)

Wood heart – you can find several style of blank wood heart plaques here
2 Screw eyesscrew eyes look like this

Red Apple Barrel craft paint – because Apple Barrel is the only craft paint I know of that you can use for both indoor and outdoor projects

Twine

Scissors

Paint brush

E6000 glue

1 inch craft magnet

Step by Step How to Make it Tutorial

1. Use the paint brush and craft paint to paint one side of the heart plaque red. I needed to use two coats of paint to fully cover my heart, letting the paint fully dry in between coats.

2. After the paint is dry, screw two screw eyes, one on each side, to the top of the heart. The wood on my plaque was soft and didn’t require drilling a pilot hole and screwed in easily using my hands.

Tip:  I unscrewed each screw eye from the heart and added a dap od E6000 glue to the bottom threads and screwed it back into the plaque to keep it from accidently unscrewing when Mr. I Shut Doors Gently I’m Telling You leaves the house.
3.  Make a hanging loop by cutting a length of twine with the scissors and tying each end through its corresponding eye screw.

4. Use the E6000 to glue one or two magnets to the center back of the heart to keep it in place when the door moves.

5. Once the glue is fully dry, hang it up, decorate, and celebrate!
