Make Popsicles!

Last summer in between racing from shop to shop tasting as much locally made ice cream as our stomachs could hold we snarfed down frozen fruit and juice Popsicles with abandon. A box of four lasted two days max.

What can I say? We’re fruit piranhas.

Sure, I recycled the box and chucked the wood sticks into the compost bin if I didn’t find a reuse for them. The small mountain of unrecyclable plastic wrappers on the other hand, grew exponentially in the kitchen trash can. Not to mention to expense when I started buying Popsicles four boxes at a time to keep up with the demand.

Do you know how much waste that makes?

Santa Claus is a smart dude. He solved our problem by popping a set of BPA free plastic Popsicle molds into Husband’s Christmas stocking.

Update February 2013: The BPA free popsicle molds in my photo is no longer available. This One Small Green Change went so well I bought a set of BPA free Volcano Popsicle Molds too. I like the Volcano molds better because it is easier to remove the popsicle. You can find them here.

The Popsicle molds sat in a cupboard since December because Mother Nature is going through menopause this year. We get one day of hot flash of sizzle temperatures followed by a week of frigid, moody rain.

Finally, finally, FINALLY it's hot summer Popsicle weather! Time to break out the molds.

July’s One Small Green Change is to get those Popsicles out of the cupboard, filled with healthy goodness, and into my freezer!

I will keep us in healthy frozen pop treats, reduce waste, and save a boatload of cash making Popsicles instead of buying them.

Do you have any ideas or recipes we should try?
