Washi Tape Dog Treat Box

Introducing the newest must have accessory for spring – the washi tape dog training treat box!

Husband said he was surprised I waited two whole days after we adopted Lacey to make her something. What can I say? I’m a maker.

Dogs do not relate cause and effect like we humans do. When I catch Lacey doing something right, I need to reward her immediately while she relates to the two behaviors (the good thing and getting a reward for doing the good thing.) If I have to run to another room to grab the treat, it may be too late for her to associate the reward for the behavior she exhibited in the other room.

Lacey does not mind this type of positive reinforcement training at all.

Stuffing dog treats in our pockets isn’t a good idea because Lacey smells the treat on us. Once she smells a treat, Lacey becomes Short Attention Span Theater. That’s why Husband carries his training treats clipped to his belt in our old agility bait bag.

I bought a box of treats for Blitzkrieg because the BPA free container clips to my belt for training. I put it away after I bought the bait bag because the bag worked better for our agility class. It will be fine for regular behavioral training though. I only wish it were a little cuter. Let’s fix that.

I scrubbed the rest of the label off the old dog treat clip box with warm water, dish soap and an old toothbrush. After the box dried, I covered it with hamburger washi tape. Cartoon French fry decorative tape isn’t my first design choice. I got it in a swap and had no idea how or if I might use it.

Since Husband and I consider fast food an occasional treat, I figured why not use foodie tape for Lacey’s not fast food and not occasional right now dog treats. Besides the price is right – free.

My washi tape dog treat container is getting a workout. We had our first evaluation and training session with our dog behaviorist Greg last Friday. Lacey is a smart girl and learns quickly!

he gave the three of us a lot of homework on door manners, excessive barking, jumping on people, and not being afraid of men going down the stairs.  This is in addition to the stuff we are already working on with Lacey: establishing positive leadership roles, toy guarding, mouthing, and not barking at the dishwasher and washer/dryer, garage door, and sweeper. Greg evaluated what and how we are conducting our sensitivity training. Then he gave us a few tweaks and the go ahead to keep on keeping on.

That’s why Husband and I contacted Greg this time around. While we appreciate the compliments Husband and I got about turning Blitzkrieg’s behavior around, but we did not do it alone. We needed a trained dog behaviorist who knows much more about dog behavior than we ever will. It helps to have a neutral third party to observe us and tell us when we are sending mixed signals to our dog.

It’s true. Dog training is as much about training the people as it is about training the dog.

Expensive but well worth it.
