Easy DIY Camp Chair Makeover
I used a fun nautical fabric to make replacement camp chair carrying bags (read the Condo Blues tutorial here) to go with my blue camp chairs. Unfortunately while there are many shades of blue in my fabric, the exact color of the chair isn’t in the fabric - and it bugs me.
A lot.

Friday Favorites Linky Party 375
Hello Friends! Do you have plans this weekend? If not, GO SEE WONDER WOMAN! Husband and I went to see it opening weekend and IT WAS AWESOME!
I see folks talking about the Wonder Woman movies as some sort of statement or Thing which I suppose it can be if you are looking for something like that. (Although I almost fell out of my chair when I saw frail little Princess Buttercup from one of my favorite guilty pleasure movie The Princess Bride plays the Amazon general that trains Wonder Woman because she is their best fighter. Also they cast a ton of female champion athletes to play the Amazons who are also drop dead healthy and gorgeous,)
In all honesty, this is the first DC Comics superhero movie in a long to,e that makes me WANT to cheer for the hero. She's not there to be all "statementy", she's there to fight the bad guys and save the day - and she does.
I gotta say, I was scared Warner Brothers was going to mess up the Wonder Woman movie and make it deep, dark, depressing, broody, and totally unlike the character I like and remember as a kid. You, know, just like they did with the recent Superman and Batman movies. I felt like I lost several hours of my life I cannot get back after I watched those poor excuses for superhero movies.
So yeah, I totally recommend this movie. Best of all it is kid friendly! This isn't a sponsored ad or anything. I just really, really like the movie and hope everyone sees it, especially men and boys so movies studios will get over "this type of movie does't make enough money to make female lead character movies" because Husband is totally ready to movie to Thematically if they'd let him!

How to Make a Hanging Self Watering Herb Garden
Husband and I like to cook with fresh herbs and the easiest and cheapest way to do that is to grow them on the patio off our kitchen. Unfortunately for my herb garden to be, most of the patio space has already been claimed by tomato and pepper plants.
No problem - if you can’t go out, go up!
I made last fall’s hanging flower pots into a self watering hanging herb garden. I hung them on hanging plant pulleys I bought from Amazon here so I can water then more easily using the pulley to lower the pots to Lisa height and then raise the planters so no one else bonks their head on a low hanging plant. Easy DIY Captain America Wreath
I want a new patriotic wreath to hang on my front door for the Fourth of July. I grabbed various bits and bobs from around the house (I always shop my house first so I don’t potentially buy stuff I end up not using for the project) and started to play with layouts and designs.
The design I kept coming back a floating star in the center of the wreath form which reminded me of Captain America’s shield. I wasn’t quite sure how to make the floating star work and joked it would be easier to hang Cap’s Shield on the front door and call it a Fourth of July wreath.

How to Make a Folding Camp Chair Carry Bag
Last summer I upgraded our first generation arm less quad chairs (they look like this) to these captain's camping chair with arm rests. (I am including affiliate links in this post for your convenience) I didn’t go nuts with the bells and whistles because the two most important things to us are:
After barely two years of service, the seams of the bags are barely holding together. The nylon fabric is so shredded I can’t repair it. The chairs are in great shape but the carrying cases are not.
I want a sturdy replacement camp chair bag.When I can’t buy, I DIY! I made one myself.

- The folding chair and bag are lightweight. We’re often carting a cooler, picnic basket, chairs, and an overly excited dog from a parking area which always seems like a million miles from where we want to be.

How to Make a Self Watering Flower Pot
Last summer Husband and I planted green and Apache peppers in my DIY self watering planter box the Mark 2. Self watering planters are fantastic for nightshades like tomatoes and peppers because they looooooooove being watered from their roots.
There are other benefits to growing vegetables in self watering containers: you conserve water by only watering the plant and not the surrounding sidewalk or patio with the sprinkler (or is that just me?) and may be less likely to kill the plant if you forget to water it every day (also me.)
I built the Mark 2 in the Earthbox style (learn more about it here) with a plastic aeration screen making a false bottom to fill with water. Unfortunately the aeration screen collapsed during the winter under the weight of snow and heavy wet soil. (Disclosure: I am including affiliate links in this post for your convenience.)
There is another style of self wicking planter that creates the water chamber with gravel and allows the water to wick to the plant roots using a layer of landscaping fabric as a wick. Both water conserving planter ideas work well but I want to to reduce potential spring maintenance of replacing aeration screens that collapse under weight of wet soil or decomposing cloth wicks on a yearly basis.
I combined the two styles to make self wicking and watering tomato planters from pretty flower pots for my container garden.

Easy DIY Three Pocket Zipper Coin Pouch
I don’t like my wallet because the dividers and padding make it quite thick when it is empty and worse when I put dollar bills in it. Which is an issue because that’s what wallets are supposed to do – hold money.
I’ve been hunting for the perfect wallet off and on for quite awhile. Ideally, I want something the same size and thickness as a coin pouch. Alas, those I like don’t have slim interior pockets for my ID and debit cards.

How to make an Embroidered Dog Poop Bag Dispenser
When you have a dog, poop happens.
Being responsible pet parents means we need to carry potty bags to clean up after Lacey when she does her her business outside and on walks.
Being the green minded people that we are, I keep and fill two grocery bag holder for the stray plastic bags that cross my path. I keep the empty grocery bag holder hanging in the kitchen to fill with random bread, frozen vegetable, and the occasional plastic grocery bag when I forget my canvas grocery bags when running a quick errand. When it is full I swap it out with the grocery bag holder I have hanging in the closet by the front door so we can reuse the bags for doggie duty. It isn’t perfect green solution but it works for us.
The big grocery bag dispenser in the closet is too big to take with us on walks. I sewed a small plastic grocery bag holder that attaches to Lacey’s leash to fill with repurposed bags from hall closet holder.

How to Naturally Kill Grubs, Fleas, and Fungus Gnats
Japanese beetle grubs decimated our “easy to care for landscaping” shortly
after we bought our condo because our builder planted the entire neighborhood
with plants that attract Japanese Beetles. Our final solution was to rip out
every bush and plant in the yard and let it lay fallow for a year. It wasn’t
pretty but it worked.
They’re back.
Dang it!
Commercial grub killers from the big box store do not work for me (hich I
only tired as a last resort.) I was leery of what the "90% OTHER INGREDIENTS" listed
on the label actually were next to the warning about not using the stuff around
kids, dogs, and fish ponds. So, yeah. I'm glad it didn't work.

How to Make a Self Watering Planter Box
Husband and I were cruising the nursery when an apache pepper plant caught his eye and we decided then and there to grow peppers in our patio garden. Yummy!
Unfortunately the self watering planter I made from a plastic storage tub had different ideas and cracked when visiting the Land of Ice and Snow (although most people call it Winter.) I wasn’t surprised because I used a light duty storage container to make the first planter.
There wasn't any love lost because while the self watering planter worked great, having a plastic storage tub taking up space on my patio wasn't' very pretty. I promised Husband a new and more rugged planter box we won’t be embarrassed to have in our back yard.

Zero Waste Candles and Friday Favorites Linky Party 369
I like to clear cooking smells after dinner with a scented soy wax melt in the candle warmer I keep in the kitchen. While Husband is fantastic about giving me eco friendly wax warmer melts (affiliate links for your convenience) as gifts, I want to switch up the scents in my collection (thanks Honey!) I decided to burn a soy candle and wouldn't you know it, all but one were spent.
I spent a rainy Saturday morning making my old spent candles into new soy candles. It didn't take very long at all and I got a fancy two toned candle out of the deal because I had more purple wax than I felt comfortable pouring into that candle jar.
Who knew a mistake could look so fancy?

9 Ways to Replace Plastic Wrap in the Kitchen
I have a like – hate relationship with plastic cling wrap. I like on those rare occasions that it actually and fully sticks to a container to keep food fresh. I also hate it most of the time because, no matter what type or brand, it never sticks, food dries out or gets freezer burn, and I end up tossing the spoiled food and the plastic wrap in the trash.
So it was no great stretch for me to find a way to keep food fresh without plastic wrap. Once I started using my Swiss Army knife of easy alternatives, I noticed we also reduced the amount of weekly household trash by quite a bit. Yay!

How to Make a Brick and Pallet Rain Barrel Stand
There is an issue with the French drain in my side yard which leaves my side yard is wet and spongy days after it rains. I installed a rain barrel as a temporary fix until I can get my Homeowner’s Association to repair the poor drainage problem. Not to mention being able to capture and use rainwater to water our flowerbeds. A quick drainage fix, free plant water, and being green – high fives all around.
Originally I planned to hook a soaker hose up to the rain barrel as a lower waste way to water the front yard and garden but it didn’t work as well as I hoped because the rain barrel water pressure was practically nil. Turns out the height of your rain barrel determines how much water pressure flows from it and not what I thought – the amount of water in the rain catch system.

Renaissance Noble Dress Project Part 3: Princess Dress Reveal!
I blogged about designing a new Elizabethan Nobility Dress to perform with Husband at Renaissance Festivals. This project was harder than any other costuming project I’ve done. I like the finished dress for the most part, but I don’t love it as much as I do the costume it replaces. There are a bunch of mistakes, and the bodice fit (among other things) needs tweaking which is why I haven’t shown you the finished project.
But I promised you a DIY renaissance festival princess dress and that you shall have, warts and all.
I started with a sketch after pouring over my favorite Elizabethan costuming books working backwards by buying the fabric first and coming up with a dress design second. I like to work the other way around.
I started with the overskirt and underskirt (forepart) first. I attempted hand embroidering the brown velvet trim but didn’t liker my test pieces, not to mention that kind of hand embroidery means an extra year for construction I didn’t have.

Have you started Spring Cleaning yet? I've been cleaning and reorganizing a cupboard shelf, closet space, and such bit by bit for the last couple of months or so. I like to think of it as "shopping the house" because I always find something I misplaced or forgot about. It's almost like getting new stuff even though it's my stuff already.
Small projects like this keep my Cabin Fever which rolls into Spring Fever in check while I'm waiting for it to be warm enough to work on projects in my garage workshop.
It not only pays off in more organization, and clearer shelves and closets (after I drop off the donation box) but this year it paid off in cash money. I tossed the stray coins I found while cleaning out my drawers and purses into my Travel Fund coin bank instead of chucking them back into the drawer.
I put over ten dollars in my coin jar without even trying. I don't know if I should proud or embarrassed we had so much money laying around the house. Oops.

DIY Magnetic No Soliciting Sign
One of the few downsides of living in a condo community with neat little sidewalks is we are an easy target for every single organization that thinks door to door sales is a fabulous way to pester people in the middle of their day with stuff they don’t want.
Like most of neighbors, I put a No Solicitors sign on my front door. Sometimes it works.
Often it doesn’t.
Every surveyor, free offer, or people offering to register me to vote (only me, never my husband, and even though I have been registered to vote since I became of age,) ignored my No Solicitors sign because they clam they “aren’t selling something.”
Even thought they end their spiel with some sort of sales pitch. Every. Single. Time. Grr!

What’s in Your Trash and How Do You Reduce it (or Not?)
I’ve been thinking a lot about trash lately. The stuff in the bin outside your house, not about tawdry things. Lacey is a genteel lady who not tolerate dirty things in her home (unless it is something muddy or smelly to roll in.)
I’ve been mulling over ideas to share how to reduce your household trash since the New Year. I’m coming up short because every draft I write sounds like some big green guru sitting on a mountain top looking down her nose at the world thinking that my Swiss Army knife of low waste options are the Pinnacle of One Size Fits All Solution to reducing household waste.
Or at least it feels that way and that is not my intent at all.
I want to offer options not absolutes because, honestly, there aren’t any one size fits all eco friendly low waste living solutions. It all depends on where you live, how you like to live, family size, etc.
I love mud!

I want to offer options not absolutes because, honestly, there aren’t any one size fits all eco friendly low waste living solutions. It all depends on where you live, how you like to live, family size, etc.

How to Make a Farmhouse Industrial Wine Cork Wreath
Many (OK, most) winter weekends husband and I mull a bottle of table quality red wine until it gets too warm outside to drink hot drinks then we switch over to making sangria. How to Make an Easy DIY Floor To Ceiling Shoe Rack Organizer
The over the door shoe rack similar to this one on the closet door and stackable shoe rack similar to this one worked for awhile. Well actually, it worked for Husband’s shoes rather than mine. My shoes are so small they would often slip through the split shelves and end up in a pile on the floor. (I am including affiliate links in this post for your convenience.)
And after years of wear and tear, there came a time when even Gorilla Tape wouldn’t put our dilapidated shelves back together again. Which, frankly, I only put them back together every time they fell apart because Husband and I have grand plans to make this closet a cedar closet and pimped out with a custom closet organizer system.
Someday.
That keeps getting pushed down the punch list because blah, blah, yadda, yadda.
Does this happen to you or am I the only one?
After two months of shoe clutter barfing out of the closet and not being able to shut the door I had enough. This project doesn’t have to be my perfect dream of custom wall to wall floor to ceiling shoe storage, it just needs to be done. Now.
